Pulses: AUS chickpea exporters coming under pressure

Winnipeg, October 12 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Wednesday, October 12.

– The pea harvest in southern Australia is off to a sluggish start due to wet conditions, according to a report by The Stock Journal. Farmers on the Eyre Peninsula were just getting in the first deliveries of gunyah peas this week.

– Some farmers near the international border of India and Pakistan began harvesting pigeon peas and lentils early this year. According to a report on Nyoooz.com, producers decided not to act early to take advantage of timely moisture.

– Australia’s chickpea industry is preparing for logistical problems as this season’s wet weather has delayed harvesting in many areas. A report on Stock & Land says contracts could face obstacles in getting filled on time if crops are delayed any further. What’s more, packers may be pressured to fill orders in a shorter time-frame as exporters will likely want to hit supply gaps as soon as they open up.

– Black beans are currently attracting prices of 46 cents (CDN) per pound at elevators across Western Canada, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. The same beans are going for 42 cents (CDN) per pound in North Dakota and 46 cents (CND) in Michigan.
