Pulses: AUS mill focuses on high-end chickpea offerings

Winnipeg, October 13 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Thursday, October 13.

– A report in the Hindu Business Line says prices for pulses, with the exception of chickpeas, are falling slightly in portions of India’s west-central region. The report says sluggish demand and favourable domestic crop reports are behind the pressure.

– Russia exported 72,800 tonnes of chickpeas from July to September, according to official government data. That is a 19 percent increase over last year. Roughly 61 percent of the supplies were sent to Turkey while just 22 percent were directed to India.

– A report in The Weekly Times says lentil-crops near Victoria, Australia are water-logged and badly in need of dry-down. Some producers say their paddocks don’t need any more moisture until the New Year.

– A new mill in Queensland, Australia is being touted as one of the largest and most modern chickpea facilities in the world. According to a report in Queensland and Country Life, the mill at the Maralong Milling facility can produce both retail and milling grades of chickpeas. The report says the chickpeas can be dehulled and split at the facility and used to fill the growing demand for gluten-free food ingredients. The plant started operating earlier this month.

– Pinto beans are currently attracting prices of 39 cents (CDN) per pound at elevators across Western Canada, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. The same beans are going for 40 cents (CDN) per pound in North Dakota, Colorado and Washington/Idaho.
