Pulses: Australian chickpea prices rocket past wheat

Winnipeg, April 12 – Chickpeas appear to be surpassing
wheat and sorghum as the preferred crop of farmers on
Australia’s east coast. A report in Queensland Country Life says
demand from India has pushed chickpeas to AU$1,000 per tonne in
Brisbane, which is nearly four times the price of wheat.
Russia’s largest feed producer has announced it is buying
out rival company NAPKO. The Cherkizovo Group will acquire
nearly 150,000 hectares and supporting infrastructure as part of

the move. NAPKO specialized in many different feed crops
including a large amount of peas.
Prices for pinto beans dropped by two and a half cents
during the past week, according to the latest information from
the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Bids are now listed at 37 cents per
pound. Prices for cranberry beans fell by half a cent and are
now listed at 48 cents per pound.
Green peas are holding steady in a range of C$7.65-$8.50
per pound. Down in North Dakota they rose 50 cents over the past
day or so to a range of C$7.99-$8.99.
Kabuli chickpeas (10mm) rose by seven cents over the past
week to a range of 54 to 63 cents per pound.
