Pulses: Black Sea peas becoming more common

Winnipeg, December 5 (CNS) – More flood warnings are being issued for Australia’s south-east coast. As much as three months’ worth of precipitation (300 millimetres) is expected to fall on Victoria and New South Wales this weekend. The President of the Victorian Farmers Association told 3AW radio that humidity levels following the event may be as problematic as the rain itself. Chickpeas and legumes are two staple crops of the region.
Indian pulse exports are expected to rise in 2018 as farmers plant more of the crops, according to a report by the Hellenic Shipping News. The chairman of the country’s pulses and grains association says chickpea acreage is expected to rise by nearly 20 per cent. He adds India’s recent imposition of a 50 per cent duty on peas will prompt farmers to plant more pulses.

Black Sea peas are feeding an increasing number of people around the world. According to a report on blackseagrain.net, Russia and Ukraine produced nearly 30 percent of the global crop in 2017. That is up from 21 percent in 2016.
Yellow pea prices in Western Canada were holding firm, according to the latest information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Bids are listed at C$5.00 to C$6.75 a bushel.
Laird #2 lentils fell half a cent over the past week and are listed at 28 to 32.5 cents a pound.
Kabuli chickpeas (8 mm) fell 16 cents over the past week and are currently going for 45 to 46 cents per pound.
Bids for light kidney beans were up three cents over the past week at 39.5 cents a pound.
Black beans in North Dakota declined by one cent and are going for 33 cents a pound.
