Pulses: Canada holds top market share in US

July 19 (CNS Canada) – Data released by the United States Department of Agriculture showed Canada holds a 43.97 per cent market share in U.S. pulse imports.

The report, which covers imports over the last 5.5 years, showed the value of Canadian pulse imports into the U.S. has averaged US$313.235 million. Mexico was a distant second at US$137.731 million, for a 13.26 per cent market share.

For the January-to-May period of this year, Canada has sold US$141.517 million in pulses to the U.S.

In Canada, data from Prairie Ag Hotwire has reported No. Laird lentils selling for 38-48 cents per lb. delivered to elevators in Saskatchewan. Eston No. 1 lentils were attracting 32 to 55 cents per lb. for current-year bids.

Large kabuli chickpeas bids were at 69 to 70 cents per lb. for Saskatchewan delivery, while No. 1 desi chickpeas were in the 35 to 36 cents per lb. range.

Green peas were at C$8 – C$8.75 and yellow peas were C$7 – C$9.75.

The USDA reports trading in most pulses is slow with moderate demand. In its Weekly Dry Bean, Pea and Lentil market report for the week ended July 18, the report said the Idaho dry edible bean harvest is 45 per cent complete with good quality.

North Dakota and Montana, however, have just started harvest with low yields being reported. Protein content is reported to be high.

The edible bean harvest in Washington is just underway with good quality reported.
