Pulses: Canadian lentil and pea exports running strong

Winnipeg, Jan. 25 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, January 25.

– Canada has exported 537,200 tonnes of lentils during the 2015/16 crop year to date, according to the latest data from the Canadian Grain Commission for the week ended January 17. The exports are running well ahead of the previous year’s pace. Domestic lentil demand is also up on the year, with the 127,300 tonnes of domestic usage nearly double the level seen at the same point in 2014/15.

– Canadian pea exports during the 2015/16 crop year to date, at 1.492 million tonnes, are about 120,000 tonnes ahead of the previous year’s level. However, domestic pea disappearance is running behind the year ago level.

– South Dakota Pulse Processors LLC is moving forward with the construction of a plant in Harrold, South Dakota. In addition to yellow peas, the company has announced that it will also be processing red lentils when operations commence in time for the 2016 crop.

– Green pea prices in the C$9.00 to C$9.75 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, yellow peas are also strong, with bids as high as C$13.00 per bushel now reported in some locations. Red lentil bids as high as 54 cents per pound are being reported in some locations, while number two large green lentils are now hitting prices as high as 70 cents and number ones have topped 75 cents at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis’s trading as high as 46 cents per pound.
