Pulses: Canadian lentil exports still strong

Winnipeg, Jan. 15 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Friday, January 15.

– Wholesale pulse prices in parts of India are reportedly easing, as stocks improve and demand backs away, according to India’s Business Standard.

– Canada has exported 535,200 tonnes of lentils during the 2015/16 crop year to date, according to the latest data from the Canadian Grain Commission for the week ended January 10. The exports are running well ahead of the previous year’s pace. Domestic lentil demand is also up on the year, with the 126,800 tonnes of domestic usage nearly double the level seen at the same point in 2014/15.

– Canadian pea exports to date, at 1.4 million tonnes, are about 100,000 tonnes ahead of the previous year’s level. However, domestic pea disappearance is running behind the year ago level.

– Ukrainian pea exports are running 5 per cent ahead of the year ago pace, with India the largest customer. India has bought 72,000 tonnes of peas from Ukraine during the first half of the 2015/16 crop year, which accounts for roughly half of the 148.800 tonnes exported to date.

– Green pea prices in the C$8.95 to C$9.50 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, yellow peas are also strong, with bids as high as C$12.50 per bushel now reported in some locations. Red lentil bids as high as 57 cents per pound are being reported in some locations, while number two large green lentils are now hitting prices as high as 68 cents and number ones have topped 72 cents at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis’s trading as high as 46 cents per pound.
