Pulses: Canadian lentil quality watched

Winnipeg, July 4 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, July 4.

– Canada exported 14,200 tonnes of peas during the week ended June 26, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data. Total pea exports during the 2015/16 crop-year-to-date, of 2.333 million tonnes compare with 2.171 million at the same point the previous year.

– Weekly Canadian lentil exports, of 13,600 tonnes were up from the only 200 tonnes exported the previous week, bringing total lentil exports-to-date to 631,400 tonnes.

– Excessive moisture in some lentil growing regions of Western Canada is starting to cause quality and yield concerns for the country’s crop. However, production is still likely to be record large, given the huge 5.8 million acres seeded.

– High local prices for tur dal (pigeon peas) have customers in India buying cheaper Canadian green lentils peas, according to reports out of the country.

– India is a large international market for pulses, and industry participants are following the monsoon conditions in the country closely this year after poor moisture in recent years. Rainfall amounts have generally been good so far, although there are still a number of key pulse growing areas facing deficiencies.

– New crop number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 43 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. That is well off old crop bids near 70 cents, but still historically strong. New crop red lentils are bid at up to 33 cents per pound, which compares with top end old crop prices of 48 cents.
