Pulses: Canadian lentil shelf near empty by July

Winnipeg, May 19 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Thursday, May 19.

– Canada will have very tight carryout supplies of peas and lentils at the end of the current 2015/16 (Aug/Jul) marketing year, according to updated estimates from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s market analysis branch. Pea stocks at the end of 2015/16 are forecast at 100,000 tonnes, down from April’s estimate of 400,000 tonnes. Lentil carryout is now forecast at only 25,000 tonnes, which compares with 100,000 tonnes in April. Canada carried out 684,000 tonnes of peas and 365,000 tonnes of lentils the previous year.

– New crop Canadian production of both peas and lentils is expected to be up on the year. The 2016/17 pea crop is forecast at 4.1 million tonnes by Ag Canada, which would be up by nearly a million tonnes from the previous year. Lentil production is forecast at 3.255 million, which would be well above the 2.373 million tonnes grown the previous year.

– Top end green pea prices are starting to back off, with prices in the C$9.00 to C$9.80 per bushel range being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, top end yellow peas are going for as much as C$13.40 per bushel in some locations. Red lentil bids of 50 cents per pound are now being reported in some locations. Meanwhile, number two large green lentils are still hitting prices as high as 75 cents, but number ones have moved off their 80 cent highs to top out at 79 cents per pound at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis trading as high as 56 cents per pound.
