Pulses: Canadian pea exports still up on the year

Winnipeg, March 6 (CNS Canada) – Canada exported 43,100 tonnes of peas during the week ended February 26, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data.
Total pea exports to date, of 2.19 million tonnes are still running well ahead of the 1.75 million exported during the same period the previous year.
Weekly farmer deliveries into the commercial pipeline of 71,600 tonnes of peas, bring the year-to-date total to 2.85 million tonnes, which compares with 2.06 million tonnes of deliveries at the same point the previous year.
A large pulse crop in India has cut into local prices in the major pulse buying country to the point that farmers selling their pulses on the open market are getting prices below the government’s Minimum Support Price (MSP), according to reports. The government MSP program is only buying up about 10 per cent of the year’s crop, leaving 90 per cent of the crop to be sold apart from the MSP.

Number 2 Laird lentils currently top out at about 56 cents per pound in Western Canada, with new crop bids as high as 36 cents per pound. Red lentils are bid up to 25 cents per pound in the spot market and as high as 23 cents per pound for new crop.
Green pea prices range from C$7.65 to as high as C$9.00 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$7.00 to C$9.00 per bushel.
Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 47 cents per pound in Western Canada.
