Pulses: Canadian pea/lentil bids rising

Winnipeg, Nov. 10 (CNS Canada) – Canadian pea and lentil prices are moving higher, according to reports out of the countryside.

Lentil bids have increased by one to as much as 10 cents per pound over the past week, according to the latest Prairie Ag Hotwire data, while peas have jumped by 50 cents per bushel at the top end. Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 60 cents per pound in Western Canada, while red lentils are bid at up to 36 cents per pound.

Green pea prices range from C$7.50 to as high as C$9.00 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$6.85 to C$8.50 per bushel.

Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 53 cents per pound in Western Canada.

In other pulse news, the US grew a record large lentil crop in 2016, with the US Department of Agriculture placing production at 564,000 tonnes in its latest report.
