Pulses: Canadian pea/lentil export pace slowing down

Winnipeg, March 21 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, March 21.

– Adverse weather conditions remain a concern in India, although opinions remain somewhat divided over the production prospects in the country.

– Canada exported 30,100 tonnes of peas but only 100 tonnes of lentils during the week ended March 13, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data. Exports were down on the week, with the availability of exportable supplies thought to be becoming rather tight.

– Pea exports to date of 1.856 million tonnes are running about 240,000 tonnes ahead of the previous year’s pace, while lentil exports of 566,300 tonnes are over 100,000 tonnes above what was seen at the same point the previous year.

– Green pea prices in the C$8.50 to C$9.75 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, yellow peas have eased off of their highs, with top-end bids losing about 50 cents over the past week to come in at C$14.00 per bushel in some locations. Red lentil bids of 51 cents per pound now being reported in some locations. Meanwhile, number two large green lentils are hitting prices as high as 75 cents and number ones have topped 80 cents at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis’s trading as high as 47 cents per pound.
