Pulses: Canadian pulse production unchanged in new forecast

Winnipeg, March 17 – Following are a few highlights in the
Canadian and world pulse markets on Thursday, March 17.

– Ag Canada pegged 2016/17 total Canadian pulse and
special crop production at 7.650 million tonnes, which was
unchanged from its February forecast and above the 6.257 million
tonnes grown in 2015/16.

Total exports of the seven major specialty and pulse crops
for 2016/17 were left unchanged at 5.985 million tonnes. Exports
for 2015/16 are forecast at 6.125 million tonnes.

Domestic usage is expected to be 1.061 million tonnes for
2016/17, which would be above the 943,000 tonnes forecast for
2015/16. Dry pea exports were pegged at 3.1 million tonnes,
lentils were pegged at 2.2 million, dry beans were 305,000,
chickpeas were 75,000, mustard seed was 120,000 and canary seed
was 140,000.

– The USDA is searching for over 15,000 tonnes of pulses for
its food aid program.

– Kidney beans are drawing prices of 26-29 cents (CDN) per
pound at elevators across the Canadian Prairies. Those same
beans are getting prices of 41 cents (CDN) per pound in North
Dakota, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire.
