Pulses: Chickpea prices soar down under

Winnipeg, April 10 – Chickpea prices on the east-central coast of Australia have risen by more the AU$200 per tonne over the past month, according to a report in Queensland Country Life. Strong demand from India is credited as the reason why.
Prairie prices for Laird number one lentils dropped five cents over the past month and 28 cents over the past year, according to the last information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Bids are now listed at 48 to 52 cents per pound.
Green peas are holding steady in a range of C$7.65-$8.50.
Pinto beans in Colorado dropped two cents over the past week and are now drawing prices of 37.5 cents (Canadian) per pound.
Chickpea planting in the US is expected to rise 53 percent, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. Last year 498,000 acres were planted which was more than double the amount planted in 2013.
The USDA has put out a tender for 300,000 cases of peas for use in the US school lunch program.
