Pulses: Chickpeas becoming crop of choice for some AU farmers

Winnipeg, March 14 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, March 14.

– Farmers in Canada could be hard-pressed to find seeds for pulse crops this year. An official with the Alberta Federation of Agriculture says prices for pea and lentil seeds are already at a premium.

– An official with Pulse Australia says chickpea area in Northern New South Wales and Queensland could reach 750,000 hectares, according to a report in the land.com.

– Recent hail storms and heavy rain have taken their toll on many crops in India including chickpeas. Regions including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana saw torrential downpours which flattened crops and flooded farms. A report from New Delhi TV say it’s too early to gauge the damage but that many farmers will be facing a fourth crop loss in a row. Local governments have asked the Indian finance department for assistance.

– Farmers in Pakistan need to become better educated in the latest agricultural technology and methods, according to the country’s National Agricultural Research director. Dr. M Azeem Khan says growing disease-free crops is needed in achieving food security for the country.

– A recent study in Western Australia saw a new technique known as “relay-sowing” deliver a 45 per cent increase in lentil production, according to a report in sciencewa.net.au. The practise involved putting primed lentil seeds into standing monsoonal rice approximately two weeks prior to harvest.

– Great northern beans are drawing prices of 25 cents (CDN) per pound at elevators across the Canadian Prairies. Those same beans are getting prices of 32 cents (CDN) per pound in Colorado, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire.
