Pulses: Chickpeas find new uses in India

Winnipeg, January 18 – Prices for green peas in Western
Canada are holding steady at C$8.22-$9.50 cents a bushel,
according to the latest information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
Bids for navy beans are 42 cents per pound, cranberry beans
are 49 cents and pintos at 39 cents.
Desi lentils are locked in a range of 33 to 35 cents per
pound.

organic matter. This has lowered the soil’s ability to hold
water. As a result suggestions have been made by scientists to
plant more pulses.
A recent trip to India by an Australian academic has
revealed some surprising facts about pulse usage. Professor
Anthony Saliba of the Functional Grains Centre relayed some of
his findings in an article by The Rural. In the story he says
chickpeas are being used in a variety of foods, including
chutney, dry dips and even some cosmetics. He also found more
Indian consumers were turning away from buying bulk supplies in
open containers in favour of packaged products from stores.
India, Bangladesh and Pakistan account for over 85 percent of
Australia’s chickpea exports.
