Pulses: Delayed start to India monsoon forecast

Winnipeg, May 16 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, May 16.

– India’s Wholesale Price Index rose by 0.3 per cent in April, it’s first increase in 17 months, with rising food prices (especially pulses) behind the movement, according to reports from the country.

– Other news out of India included reports that the government had released more pulses from buffer stocks in an attempt to control prices.

– India’s monsoon season will be delayed by a week, according to a forecast from the India Meteorological Department. The four-month Kerala monsoon period typically starts on June 1, and accounts for about three-quarters of India’s annual rainfall.

– Canada exported 82,600 tonnes of peas and 8,200 tonnes of lentils during the week ended May 8, according to the weekly Canadian Grain Commission data. Total exports of both crops continue to run ahead of the year-ago level.

– Green pea prices in the C$9.00 to C$10.00 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, top end yellow peas are going for as much as C$13.40 per bushel in some locations. Red lentil bids of 50 cents per pound are now being reported in some locations. Meanwhile, number two large green lentils are hitting prices as high as 75 cents and number ones have topped 80 cents at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabuli’s trading as high as 56 cents per pound.
