Pulses: Dry bean harvest winding down in US

Winnipeg, September 6 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Tuesday, September 6.

– Pressure is building on Indian scientists to develop new genetically modified pulses. The country’s Director-General of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Trilochan Mohapatra has publicly called on researchers to double their efforts as citizens clamour for more chickpeas and lentils. India has been dealing with an acute shortfall of supplies for the past few years.

– The dry bean harvest continues to progress across the US Midwest. According to the latest information from the United States Department of Agriculture, Idaho has harvested 72% of its crop, Montana is farther along at 92% while North Dakota is virtually finished. In Montana, the lentil harvest is 79% complete and Washington has harvested 81% of its dry peas.

– Blackeye peas, garbanzo beans and limas have established poorly or not at all in much of California, according to the USDA.

– Pinto bean prices in Idaho are hanging around the US$28 to U$30 (per hundred-weight) mark, according to a report in Magicvalley.com. Yields haven’t been established yet but one grower said he thought they would be the lowest in 5 years due to extreme highs and lows in the summer weather.

– Officials in India have pegged the country’s summer-planted pulse crop at 7.8 million tonnes. That is up 40 percent from a year ago.

– Green peas are currently attracting prices of C$6.70 to C$7.75 per bushel at elevators across Western Canada, the same peas are also going for C$6.82 to C$7.47 cents per bushel in North Dakota and C$7.80 to C$8.58 per bushel in Washington and Idaho, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
