Pulses: Edible bean harvest starting up

Winnipeg, Sept. 1 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Thursday, September 1.

– The edible bean harvest has begun in Minnesota and North Dakota, and will begin within the next week or two in Ontario and Manitoba, according to the latest report from Thompsons Limited. Overall yields are looking below average.

– Harvest operations in Saskatchewan, where the bulk of Canada’s peas and lentils are grown, were aided by favourable weather over the past week, according to the latest provincial report. As of August 29, field peas were 64 per cent harvested, while lentils were 40 per cent harvested.

– Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 47 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. Red lentils are bid at up to 32 cents per pound.

– Green pea prices range from C$6.70 to as high as C$8.00 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$6.15 to C$7.11 per bushel.
