Pulses: English peas grow in popularity

Winnipeg, September 23 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Friday, September 23.

– Edible bean yields in Manitoba are coming in higher than expected, according to a report from Thompsons. The report pegs the harvest at an average of 17 to 19 bags per acre. While rain has delayed the harvest somewhat, it hasn’t impact the crop.

– A report by the Northarvest Bean Growers Association says the majority of dry beans growers in North Dakota and Minnesota chose revenue protection over yield protection in 2015. The association says it expects the trend to be similar in 2016 as well.

– The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resources Economics and Sciences has pegged the upcoming domestic winter pulse crop at 3.1 million tonnes, which is up nearly 30 percent from the 2.4 million tonnes grown in 2015/16. Queensland is expected to produce the country’s largest chickpea crop at 700,000 tonnes. South Australia is believed to be home to the largest lentil crop at 235,000 tonnes.

– Pulse acreage is increasing in England. According to a report on farmingmonth.uk.co, the country has seen an 18 percent increase in pea acres over the year. A cold and wet spring, followed by a hot spell in July could spell lower yields though. Still, the overall quality for the peas is said to be generally good.

– Pinto beans are currently attracting prices of 36.5 cents (Canadian) per pound at elevators across Western Canada, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. The same beans are going for 39 cents per pound (Canadian) in Colorado, North Dakota and Washington/Idaho.
