Winnipeg, February 1 – Prices for pinto beans on the
Prairies were holding steady at 38 cents per pound, according to
the latest information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
Black beans were also keeping firm at 40 cents per pound.
Dark kidney beans were listed at 46 cents per pound.

the rise in interest. As a result, both western North Dakota and
eastern Montana are reportedly seeing acreage increases.
A push is on to plant more beans and peas in the UK. A
report in Farmers Weekly says supermarkets are demanding meat
and milk protein alternatives using non-imports.
According to the USDA’s weekly market summary, trading
activity in pinto beans, green peas and lentils was steady with
moderate demand for the week ended January 31.
A report by the Economic Times says yellow peas are
starting to become a more-frequent substitution for chickpeas in
India. The report says chickpeas are sometimes three times more
expensive than yellow peas, which has prompted consumers to opt
for cheaper fare. One analyst said this could help lower the
seasonal dal crisis as consumers will more readily switch to
other options when chickpea supplies are low.
