Winnipeg, December 2 – Yellow peas in Western Canada are up 20 cents on the week. According to the Prairie Ag Hotwire, bids range between C$6.85 at the lows to C$8.75 at the highs.
Cranberry beans were up by half a cent on the week to 49 cents per pound.
A crop specialist in Alberta is downplaying fears fababean acreage in the province will dwindle away to almost nothing. In 2016, planted area in the province fell by half to 50,000 acres. The move was credited to the drought of 2015 and a subsequent decision by many growers to switch to lentils and peas. However, in an interview with The Alberta Farmer, Mark Olson of Alberta Agriculture says he believes the acres will slowly build back up.

Some farmers in the southeast corner of Australia say it’s been a great year for lentils with some yields coming in at 2.5 to 3 tonnes per hectare. Chickpeas are also strong with some fields hitting 2 tonnes per hectare. The lone exception appears to be peas with participants telling the Ararat Advertiser results were mixed depending on the region.
