Pulses: Field pea acreage in Manitoba doubled

Winnipeg, July 22 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Friday, July 22.

– Canada exported 200 tonnes of peas during the week ended July 17, as well as 200 tonnes of beans, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data.

– Field pea acreage in Manitoba has more than doubled this year, according to Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation. Almost 169,000 acres are estimated to be seeded to field peas, compared to just over 67,000 acres last year.

– Field pea and lentil crops in Saskatchewan are experiencing more moisture stress due to excessive rains throughout the province, according to Saskatchewan’s latest crop report.

– The USDA purchased 9.050 tonnes of pulses for shipment as food aid, according to the USDA’s Commodity Credit Corporation office.

– More Australian farmers continue to grow chickpeas as prices rise, driven up by dry crop conditions and shortages in India, according to reports. Consumption of chickpeas in Australia is low, leaving more than 95 per cent of the national crop to be exported.

– Desi chickpea prices in Western Canada remain steady, trading at 31.0 cents per pound. Large caliber kabuli chickpeas saw a four cent drop in the last week to 54 cents per pound.
