Pulses: India considers pulse import duty increase

Winnipeg, March 10 (CNS Canada) – India’s government is considering a proposal to raise import duties on pulses, according to a report from the country’s Business Standard newspaper. Larger local crops and falling domestic prices were cited as reasons behind the proposal.

Canada exported 76,800 tonnes of peas during the week ended March 5, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data.

Total Canadian pea exports to date, of about 2.2 million tonnes, are running about 600,000 tonnes ahead of the previous year’s pace.

Weekly lentil exports of 12,100 tonnes brought the year-to-date total to 607,100 tonnes, which compares with 566,200 tonnes at the same point the previous year.

Top end large green lentil bids have trended lower in recent weeks, with number 2 Lairds currently topping out at about 48 cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. New crop bids, meanwhile, are lower still at about 32 to 36 cents per pound.

Red lentil bids range from about 21 to 24 cents per pound, with new crop prices in a similar area.

Green pea bids range from rom C$7.65 to C$8.50 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$7.00 to C$8.75 per bushel, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire.

Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 47 cents per pound in Western Canada.
