Pulses: India extends limits on pulse traders

Winnipeg, September 21 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Wednesday, September 21.

– A new report from Statistics Canada that looked at Canadian crops using satellite data and computer imaging estimates 2.87 million tonnes of lentils will be produced in the country during the 2016/17 season. That is much lower than an estimate made in August using data supplied by farmers. It said 3.23 million tonnes would be grown.

– A new market may have opened up for chickpeas in the US. HIPPEAS has rolled out a new brand of organic chickpea puffs, according to a press release. The snacks are made of USDA certified supplies and the company says some of the sales will be used to help out chickpea farmers in eastern Africa.

– The Indian government has announced plans to extend stockholding limits (license requirements) on pulse traders, according to a report in The Hindu Business Line. The cabinet says the move is needed to curb hoarding of chickpeas, lentils, edible oils and other foodstuffs. Retail prices for pulses have risen to a point where many residents are unable to afford them. The initial limit was due to run out on October 1, but has now been extended to September 30 of next year.

– Moong bean growers in India are receiving support from the government. In an effort to support local growers about 3,300 tonnes of beans were purchased at the support price (plus a bonus rate). The beans will be used as part of the country’s overall buffer supply, according to The Business Standard.

– Green peas are currently attracting prices of C$7.00 to C$7.50 per bushel at elevators across Western Canada, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. The same peas are going for C$6.14 to C$7.27 in North Dakota and C$7.92 to C$8.72 in Washington/Idaho.
