Pulses: India on guard for hoarders

Winnipeg, April 20 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Wednesday, April 20.

– India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned authorities and state governments to remain vigilant in guarding against pulse hoarders, in order to avoid a repeat situation in 2015 that saw prices rise due in part to manufactured shortages. According to reports, Modi also told the country’s food ministry to take the steps necessary to make sure there are no issues with pulse procurement or distribution.

– Forecasts calling for above normal precipitation during the upcoming monsoon season in India are expected to help boost crop production going forward, which should help food inflation moderate over the next few months, according to reports out of the country.

– Canadian farmers are expected to be planting record acres of both peas and lentils this spring, with pea area forecast at anywhere from 4.0 million to 5.0 million acres, and lentils from 4.4 million to 5.5 million. Statistics Canada releases its acreage estimates on April 21.

– Green pea prices in the C$9.00 to C$9.75 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, top end yellow peas are going for as much as C$12.90 per bushel in some locations. Red lentil bids of 53 cents per pound now being reported in some locations. Meanwhile, number two large green lentils are hitting prices as high as 75 cents and number ones have topped 80 cents at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis’s trading as high as 56 cents per pound.
