Pulses: India working to control high prices

Winnipeg, May 4 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Wednesday, May 4.

– Nepal’s Metrological Forecasting Division predicts that drought conditions will continue for another month, creating further problems for crop development in the country.

– India’s government has released 10,400 tonnes of tur (pigeon peas) and urad (black lentils) stocks to sell at subsidized rates in an an effort to control rising pulse prices, according to reports.

– Green pea prices in the C$9.00 to C$10.15 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, top end yellow peas are going for as much as C$12.50 per bushel in some locations. Red lentil bids of 52 cents per pound now being reported in some locations. Meanwhile, number two large green lentils are hitting prices as high as 75 cents and number ones have topped 80 cents at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis’s trading as high as 56 cents per pound.
