Pulses: India working to control pulse prices

Winnipeg, Sept. 12 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, September 12.

– The Indian government is considering invoking its “Essential Commodities Act”, which would impose limits on retail prices for pulses in the country. While wholesale pulse prices have come down off their highs, the retail prices paid by consumers remain high.

– India also announced plans that it was increasing its buffer stocks of pulses to 2 million tonnes. The country grew 17 million tonnes of pulses in 2015/16, but typically consumes 22 million tonnes.

– Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 46 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. Red lentils are bid at up to 29 cents per pound.

– Green pea prices range from C$6.80 to as high as C$7.75 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$6.00 to C$7.18 per bushel.
