Winnipeg, May 3 – Flooding in the central Queensland region of eastern Australia has damaged pulse crops, according to a report on allaboutfeed.net. One farmer said he had lost over 6,000 acres of mixed crop while another one said his paddock of chickpeas was covered by six metres of water. The damage is estimated to be in the millions of dollars.
According to a report in the India Times, tempers are growing short in western India, where chickpea farmers are clamouring to sell their harvest to state-run purchase centres before the government closes the procurement process. The Indian government offers minimum support prices to farmers for chickpeas but has said it will soon wind up the program. Some farmers say they’ve been trying since March to sell their crops.
