Winnipeg, June 16 – High pulse prices in Australia have cut into the country’s grain production by 33 percent as farmers shift acreage to the better-returning chickpea and lentil crops, according to The Australian Bureau of Agricultural Resource Economics and Sciences. The bureau noted that chickpea sowings in New South Wales and Queensland could hit record highs.

The owner of the Kumar Trading Company in India says domestic price hikes could be coming to lentils and chickpeas in the coming months. In an interview with The Indian Tribune, Sarwan Kumar said the recent farmers’ protest in Madhya Pradesh was the reason the hike could be coming. Pulse prices in India have been declining over the past few months, according to the report.
