Winnipeg, April 29 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Friday, April 29.

– India’s drought situation is worsening. At least 10 of the country’s 29 states have declared droughts and have been forced to pump out groundwater at record rates. So far the economic damage has been mostly limited to the agricultural side of the economy, but reports out of the country say it will start to affect the broader economy soon.

– Fababean acreage across Canada is expected to dip this year. Industry-watchers peg acreage in Alberta at 90,000 acres to 95,000 acres, which is down slightly from last year’s 100,000 acre-plus offering. Prices are roughly C$5 to C$6 a bushel, one participant said, which is down slightly from last year.

– Officials in Australia say it appears that a shipment of contaminated bean sprouts likely came from the Queensland growing district. Various reports say over 40 people were hospitalized after eating the sprouts which contained salmonella.
