Winnipeg, April 13 – Edible bean acreage in Manitoba has been pegged at 110,000 to 120,000 acres by a provincial government specialist. Dennis Lange says acreage looks to be similar to last year. Yields for edible beans in Manitoba in 2016 were just shy of 1,700 pounds an acre on average. Statistics Canada releases its official acreage estimates on April 21.
The absence of a futures market for pulses and other agricultural commodities is being hailed as one reason why chickpea markets follow a “roller-coaster of high and low prices,” according to a researcher. Professor Ashok Gulati told the Indian Express restrictions on stocking by private agencies, and a ban on exports were other reasons handcuffing the market at a time when favourable monsoon seasons have opened the door to opportunities.
