Winnipeg, July 17 (CNS Canada) – Canada exported only 500 tonnes of peas and 200 tonnes of lentils during the week ended July 9 as old crop business slows down for the season, according to the latest report from the Canadian Grain Commission.
Total exports of both crops are still running well ahead of the previous year’s pace with only a few weeks left in the 2016/17 marketing year.
Total lentil production in India hit 22.4 million tonnes in 2016/17, according to a report from the country’s agriculture ministry. That’s up 37 per cent from the previous year, which should cut into import demand. However, seeding for the 2017 summer crop was down on the year due to lower prices, according to reports.

Top end large green lentil bids are holding steady, with number 2 Lairds currently topping out at about 40 cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. New crop bids, meanwhile, range from about 31 to 39 cents per pound.
Red lentil bids range from about 19 to 26 cents per pound, with new crop prices also topping out at 25 cents.
Top-end green pea bids range from C$8.00 to C$8.75 per bushel in Western Canada, while yellow peas range from C$7.00 to C$9.75 per bushel. New crop pea prices top out at C$8.25 for both green and yellow peas.
Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices as high as 70 cents per pound in some cases, with new crop pricing as high as 53 cents per pound (9mm).
