Pulses: North Dakota dry bean farmers enjoy big harvest

Winnipeg, January 16 – Prices for light kidney beans in Western Canada fell one cent last week to an average bid of 43 cents per pound, according to information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
Number one laird lentils were holding steady in a range of 61-69 cents per pound.
Large kabuli chickpeas (10 mm) are locked in a range of 63 to 70 cents per pound.
Yellow peas continue to attract strong interest. According to the Hotwire, they are currently going for C$7.62-$9.00 a bushel.
It was a busy season for many pulse producers in North Dakota. According to the USDA, North Dakota dry bean production was estimated to be 12.3 million hundred-weight in 2016. That was up 52 percent from the year before.
The USDA pegged the country’s edible bean production in 2016 at 28.7 million cwt, which is down four percent from 2015. The planted area for 2016 was estimated to be 1.66 million acres, which was down by six percent over the previous year.
