Pulses: Northern Indian Pea Crops Hit By Rust, Blight

Winnipeg, Dec. 8 – Following are a few highlights in the
Canadian and world pulse markets on Tuesday, December 8.

– Researchers at the Punjab Agricultural University in northern India say it was combination of late blight disease and rust that damaged pea crops in the region. Farmers noticed yellow to dark coloured circular spots on leaves shortly before contacting the university.

– Commodity forecaster ABARES has updated its outlook for Australia’s farm sector. The company says earnings from chickpea exports are expected to be up 56 percent in 2015/16.

– The Australian Year of the Pulses Committee is encouraging all Australians to eat legumes at least 2 to 3 times a week. 2016 has been declared Year of the Pulses by the United Nations. The UN says pulses can help dig farmers out of poverty as they yield two to three times higher prices than cereals.

– Yellow pea prices in the C$8.50-10.50 per bushel range
are being reported in Western Canada, by the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Meanwhile, yellow peas in North Dakota are going for US$8.78-10.81 per bushel.
