June 14 (CNS Canada) – Murad Al-Katib, the businessman who turned a prairie pulse processor into a worldwide corporation, has been selected as the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year for 2017.
Al-Katib, President and Chief Executive Officer of Saskatchewan-based AGT Food and Ingredients Inc. was chosen from 59 country winners vying for the title at an awards ceremony in Monaco, June 10.
Al-Katib started the pulse processing enterprise in 2003 in Regina. Today AGT operates 46 manufacturing plants. It went public in 2007 and turned in revenue of $1.4 billion in 2016. It exports about 23 per cent of the world’s lentils to more than 120 countries around the world.

Ontario dry beans are off to a good start to the growing season, according to the Thompsons Dry Beans report. About 85 per cent of beans had been planted as of June 13.
Manitoba seeding operations are essentially complete, said the report, with weed control underway in many areas. The province had received the normal amount of heat for this stage in the growing season, but more precipitation is needed with only 55 percent of normal recorded.
Michigan dry bean growers are also reporting good seeding progress, although they are 23 per cent behind the normal average of 65 per cent for this time of year.
Minnesota reported 97 per cent dry beans planted, which is above the five-year average of 90 percent.
North Dakota reported 98 per cent planted, compared to the five-year average of 83 per cent.
Many farmers in India are looking to shift from pulse crops and oilseeds and move into cotton and corn for the karif season.
Pulse acres are likely to decline as they are currently being sold at below minimum support prices in several markets of India.
Seeding has been delayed by farmer protests across the country. In some areas, just 1.1 percent of the area covered at the same last year had been seeded.
