Pulses: Prairie pea farmers look for more efficient harvest

Winnipeg, November 15 – Kabuli chickpeas (10mm) are up 17 cents from last year at this time, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. They are presently listed at 48 to 53 cents a pound.
A professor from the University of Saskatchewan recently told a conference crowd in Winnipeg that increased yields and “standability” are the two traits pea farmers in Western Canada want to see more of. He explained more bushels would raise producers’ incomes while a higher stand would enable them to harvest the plants more efficiently.

Pinto bean prices in the northern US states of North Dakota and Minnesota appear to be solidifying around the 30 US cents per pound level, according to the USDA Market News Service. Colorado and Nebraska are also recording prices at 30 US cents.
Pulse prices in India continue to remain high despite a drop in wholesale rates, according to a report on dawn.com. Retailers are making high margins on sales but so far the government has refrained from taking any action.
Green pea prices range from C$7.50 to as high as C$9.00 per
bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$6.85 to C$8.50 per bushel.
A report from APK-Inform Agency says Russia bumped up its pea exports slightly during the week of November 7-13 to 6,000 tonnes.
