Winnipeg, August 22 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, August 22.
– The Canadian industry is bracing for potentially large crops ahead of Statistics Canada’s official crop estimates set to be released Tuesday. Pre-report estimates see the size of pea and lentil crops both increasing, with pea crops ranging from four million to five million tonnes compared to 3.201 million in 2015, and lentil crops ranging from three million to four million tonnes, up from 2.373 million in 2015.

– Australia has seen large increases in Indian pulse plantings due to ample rains and high prices, according to Australia’s agricultural ministry. So far, Indian pulse plantings are up 39 per cent from last year.
– New field pea varieties are emerging from pulse breeding nurseries in Montana, according to reports. There are a variety of trials still being conducted on both experimental and commercial lines, however a new green pea and a new yellow pea will be released starting this year.
– Top end yellow pea prices dropped 10 cents in Western Canada, settling at C$7.65 per bushel, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire.
– Large caliber kabuli chickpeas in Western Canada remained steady at 54 (Canadian) cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire. Desi chickpeas also remained unchanged at 31 (Canadian) cents per pound.
