Winnipeg, April 19 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Tuesday, April 19.
– Canadian farmers are expected to be planting record acres of both peas and lentils this spring, with pea area forecast at anywhere from 4.0 million to 5.0 million acres, and lentils from 4.4 million to 5.5 million. Even the low end of trade guesses would represent a new record for each crop, with area well ahead of last year. Statistics Canada releases its acreage estimates on April 21.

– Production issues in many major chickpea growing countries have helped take prices higher, but a lack of available seed will likely hamper any acreage increases in Canada, according to industry sources. Canada seeded 115,000 acres of chickpeas in 2015, and will likely see a similar amount in 2016.
– Green pea prices in the C$9.00 to C$9.75 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, top end yellow peas are going for as much as C$12.90 per bushel in some locations. Red lentil bids of 53 cents per pound now being reported in some locations. Meanwhile, number two large green lentils are hitting prices as high as 75 cents and number ones have topped 80 cents at some locations.
– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis’s trading as high as 56 cents per pound.
