Pulses: Sask lentil crops hurt, but India looking good

Winnipeg, Aug. 16 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Tuesday, August 16.

– Excess moisture in parts of Saskatchewan has seriously hurt the lentil crops, with many acres being written off by Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation due to disease and flooding, according to reports.

– Above average monsoon rains in parts of northern and central India have caused a rise in pulse crop plantings, according to reports predicting large production and falling prices.

– India’s wholesale inflation rate climbed 3.55 per cent in July, according to reports out of the country. That was the fastest rise in 23 months, with food inflation, including pulses, up 11.82 per cent.

– Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 44 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. Red lentils are bid at up to 31 cents per pound.

– Green pea prices range from C$6.25 to as high as C$8.30 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$6.15 to C$7.75 per bushel.
