June 28 (CNS Canada) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that edible bean crops in the top producing states are variable.
– In North Dakota, the top bean-producer in the U.S., 68 per cent of edible beans are rated as good to excellent as of June 27, compared to 65 per cent a year ago.
– Michigan beans have been hit by storms that have caused damages estimated at 20-25 per cent. The first crop condition report of the season rates 45 per cent as good to excellent, while 26 per cent of beans were rated poor to very poor.

– In Minnesota, 72 per cent of dry beans are rated good to excellent, compared to 63 per cent one year ago.
– The first crop condition reports for beans in Nebraska rated 57 per cent of the crop as being in good to excellent condition, compared to 72 per cent a year ago.
– Idaho conditions have improved during the past week with 47 per cent of beans now rated good to excellent, up from 34 per cent a week ago. Fifty-three percent of the crop is rated fair to poor.
A drink made from fermented chickpeas, navy beans and red lentils has won the 10th annual Mission ImPULSEible product development competition.
Called Megumi, the prebiotic drink contains 11 grams of protein and 24 per cent of the daily recommended amount of dietary fibre. It was created by Jon Geneau, Kathleen Chan, Marvi Carandang and Yuka Yamazaki from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax.
The competition challenges post-secondary students to create a novel food product using Canadian pulses.
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences predicts the country’s lentil production will increase 26 per cent from a year ago to 950,000 acres. Better varieties and drought tolerance are cited as reasons for the growth.
