Pulses: US farmers scour market for chickpea seeds

Winnipeg, March 17 – Crimson #1 lentils rose two cents overnight, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Prices are now listed at 20 to 26 cents per pound in Western Canada.
Prices for pinto beans in Western Canada were up half a cent last week at 37.5 cents per pound.
Green peas were down 30 cents on the week in Washington and Idado. Prices were listed at C$7.99-$8.39 per bushel.
Yellow peas in Washington and Idaho were down 40 cents at a price of C$8.79-$9.33.

According to a report in the Capital Press, farmers in Idado and other states are having trouble getting their hands on chickpea seeds. The CEO of the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council says growers should get their names on the list for next year as soon as possible. Tim McGreevy told the paper that strong demand and low prices for wheat and barley put pressure on supplies. As well, he says problems with the seed harvest in Canada prompted some northern growers to buy up US supplies.
Turkey has lowered the import duty for chickpea from 19.3% to zero, according to a report from UKrAgroConsult. The move was made to try and bring domestic prices down before the start of the new season on July 1. However, at this stage, the government is reportedly prepared to re-introduce the duty after the new season begins.
