Winnipeg, Nov. 23 (CNS Canada) – The USDA is looking for edible beans and other pulses for food aid programs.
The agency’s Commodity Credit Corporation tendered for 3,000 tonnes of pulses and an additional 480 tonnes of pinto beans.
In other pulse news, farmers in India are in the middle of seeding their rabi season crops, with the area seeded to pulses expected to be up on the year. While some farmers expressed concern that the recent banning of old 500 and 1,000 note rupees in the country would be detrimental to the ag sector, government officials maintain that the move to curb corruption will provide a net benefit.

Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 65 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. However, actual supplies that would meet the criteria are few and far between. Most of the country’s chickpea crop is likely destined for feed channels, with feed prices in the 25 to 32 cents per pound area, according to industry sources.
Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 60 cents per pound in Western Canada, while red lentils are bid up to 35 cents per pound.
Green pea prices range from C$7.50 to as high as C$9.00 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$6.85 to C$8.50 per bushel.
