Pulses: World to produce biggest pulse crop in 2016

Winnipeg, June 14 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, June 14.

– This year the world will produce the biggest pulse crop in history, according to reports, however per capita availability of pulses remains below levels seen in the 1970s. Global pulse production could push past 79 million metric tons, or 10.8 kilograms per person.

– Australia is reporting some of the best pulse crops ever for 2016, with ideal weather conditions in western and south Australia, Victoria and Queensland. A little more than 1.93 million hectares of pulse crops have been seeded across Australia.

– Top end green pea prices remain steady in the C$9.00 to C$9.75 per bushel range in Western Canada. Top end yellow peas are still going for as much as C$12.25 per bushel in some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada remain strong, with large caliber Kabuli’s continuing to trade as high as 58 cents per pound and Desi’s trading as high as 31 cents per pound.
