Frequent Alberta Farmer contributor Jeff Melchior and staff writer Alexis Kienlen were among the winners of Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation awards.
Melchior won gold in the weekly press reporting category for his story, Farmers lose when energy companies walk away. The story looked at the growing problem of abandoned wells on farm properties and how these weed-infested sites are contributing to the spread of herbicide-resistant kochia.
Kienlen won bronze in the same category for, Out of the Blue: Colony targeted by animal rights activists, which detailed the day when members of the Jumbo Valley Hutterite Colony arrived at their turkey barn to find it occupied by animal rights activists. The story looked at what colony members faced, how the protest was organized, and the biosecurity threat it posed.
