More irrigation could be coming to Alberta. A study will be undertaken to see if expanding irrigation in the Special Areas and the MD of Acadia is doable, the province says. The Special Areas board and municipality are working with the province and the Canada Infrastructure Bank (which put up most of the money for a 200,000-acre irrigation expansion announced last fall).
The Special Areas and the MD of Acadia cover more than five million acres of land between Red Deer and the Saskatchewan border. The study is aimed at determining if expanding irrigation in that area is technically and financially feasible.
“Securing a reliable supply of water is critical to creating new opportunities in the Special Areas region,” said Jordon Christianson, chair of the Special Areas board.
