Alberta Beef Producers, the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association, and the Canadian Cattle Association are undertaking “an Alberta beef competitiveness study.”
The groups say the study “will seek to understand the apparent lack of packing capacity.”
It will focus on three areas: barriers to entry and expansion for the packing sector; confidentiality concerns in regard to price transparency in Canadian boxed beef prices; and a review of price discovery for fed cattle in North America.

The need for a better understanding of the beef supply chain has increased over the past two years, the groups said in a statement.
“COVID-19 shone a light on our supply chain challenges and we continue to see impacts in today’s markets, putting immense pressure on beef producers and consumers.”
