Rising canola seed costs a familiar story

It’s no surprise to growers, but canola seed is getting more expensive every year.

“Upward annual price change for canola seed has been an ongoing trend for some time,” Alberta Agriculture market analyst Ryan Furtas said in a recent Agri-News note.

During the most recent September-May period, the average price for Roundup Ready canola rose 82 cents per pound to $13.41 while Liberty Link increased by 82 cents to $15.08. More than 95 per cent of Alberta canola acres are seeded to those two brands.

Moo translator and methane measures: There’s an app for that

Dalhousie University researchers use artificial intelligence to create new dairy farm apps that analyze cattle sounds and measure methane.

“A farmer seeding canola at five lb. per acre incurred a per acre seed cost of $67 to $75 depending on the herbicide system,” the article states.

This year’s canola crop was the most expensive ever planted but the major reason was fertilizer prices, which topped $200 per canola acre.

“Seed prices increased at a significant rate but only modestly contributed to 2022 record input costs,” said Furtas.
