Glacier FarmMedia | MarketsFarm — India was the top customer for Canadian peas and lentils through the first three months of the 2024/25 marketing year, with total exports of both pulse crops running well ahead of the year ago pace.
Canadian pea exports in October came in at 437,629 tonnes, which was down by 28 per cent from tonnes the previous month, according to the latest Statistics Canada trade data. However, crop year-to-date pea exports of 1.066 million tonnes were running 26 per cent ahead of the year ago pace.
India was the largest destination, with 594,514 tonnes of peas exported to the country through the first three months of the marketing year. India was nearly non-existent in the market for Canadian peas at this time a year ago, with a temporary pause on India’s yellow pea import tariffs behind the increased demand. The duty-free movement is set to expire at the end of December, unless India announces another extension.

India was also the top buyer of Canadian lentils in October, accounting for 38 per cent of the 332,400 tonnes exported during the month. Turkey and the United Arab Emirates were additional major export destinations. Crop-year-to-date lentil exports of 564,834 tonnes were 17 per cent ahead of what moved the same time a year ago.
Canadian chickpea exports in October came in at 12,516 tonnes, which was up one per cent from the previous month. Year-to-date chickpea exports of 32,740 tonnes compare with 47,997 tonnes through the first quarter of the previous marketing year.
