Global Markets: Canada receives vaccines, enacts public health measures

WINNIPEG, Feb. 22 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The Public Health Agency of Canada said the country will receive shipments of more than 640,000 total COVID-19 vaccine doses from Pfizer and Moderna this week, the most doses in one week since the start of the vaccine roll-out. Last week, Pfizer delivered a then-record 400,000 doses. It was announced on Friday that one million Canadians have now received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Today, the federal government’s new public health measures came into effect, such as a three-day hotel quarantine for most travellers landing at Canadian airports and those entering the country by land receiving self-swab kits.

– Today, the United States will reach a grim milestone in the pandemic as the COVID-19 pandemic death toll will total 500,000. Despite this, the number of cases has dropped in some states and the federal government announced on Sunday it has delivered two million out of six million vaccine doses backlogged by extreme weather. However, Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN on Sunday that it is “possible” Americans may still have to wear masks by 2022.

– An oil spill along the Mediterranean coast last week has been called “one of the most severe ecological disasters to hit Israel” by the country’s Nature and Parks Authority. Out of the 190-kilometre length of Israel’s coastline, 170 km has been covered in tar and the Ministry of Interior has closed the country’s beaches. The source of the spill is unknown, but the culprit is suspected to be an offshore oil vessel.
